Themes and principles

The EYFS is based on four themes, with each theme linked to an important principle:

1. A unique child
Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.

2. Positive relationships
Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.

3. Enabling environment
Children learn and develop well in an enabled environment where practitioners respond to their individual interests and needs.

4. Learning and development
Children develop and learn at different rates and all areas of development are equally important.

Curriculum

In the Moment Planning

We start our planning with 'All about me', so we can see what your child is already doing at home. We then follow their interests and decide how we can extend their learning on this.

  • The child's interest - this is when a Child shows an interest in something.
  • Teaching to extend learning - our practitioners will see the opportunity to extend their interest by asking questions, and to provide resources to extend their interest in learning within their environment.
  • Next steps - practitioners will then help to map out each child's interest and plan an environment that works for their key child and their interest.

Puddle Ducks has worked hard on its learning environment:

  1. Understanding the importance of the impact that the environment can have on children's learning
  2. Recognise the importance of play and team playing
  3. Recognise the importance of play and language development
  4. Ready to learn in a  safe and secure home to home environment and a sense of belonging

Puddle Ducks (Day Nursery)

Puddle Ducks is based on the site of Hillcrest Primary School. We run the Nursery from one of the rooms, with children ranging from 2 years old up to 4 years old. We accept all funding for 2, 3 and 4 year old children. All staff are DBS checked, pediatric first aid trained, and have completed Safeguarding training. Most of our staff hold at least a Level 3 qualification in child development, and all have experience working with children. Our setting's ethos is very child centered and we plan 'in the moment' revolving around the child's interests. We offer a wide range of resources, both indoors and outdoors, and spend most of our day implementing 'Free Play' where the children can explore both indoors and outdoors. We believe children learn best through play, with the support of staff to extend their learning and development in the moment. We offer a healthy snack in the morning and during afternoon sessions. For lunch, the children have a home packed lunch. Upon arrival the children are welcomed into the room, and encouraged to look for their named Duck to put into the pond. After which, we all sit on the carpet for registration and to talk about the weather and sing the days of the week song. Puddle Ducks aims to work in partnership with parents/carers and other agencies, and to strive to communicate and build positive, relationships with all parents/carers.

We also accept tax free childcare vouchers.
